Validation of Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) Interviews

Download Interviewing referral information (PDF)

Validation analyses may be undertaken on video recorded forensic interviews carried out according to the ABE guidance, or other investigative interview framework.

ABE interviews with child or vulnerable witnesses can be analysed and reported with respect to:

  • the impact of antecedents on the evidence of the witness
  • any special needs or circumstances evidenced by the interviewee
  • the conduct of the interview
  • the weight that may be attached to the information that emerges from the interview.

Written and oral evidence in relation to ABE has been given in both civil and criminal proceedings.

Analysis of ABE interviews normally demands good quality video record and a complete and accurate typed transcript.  Records of the antecedents of the interview, including pre-interview assessment and planning are also of considerable importance.  (Records required by para 2.123 (p20) of the current guidance (external site) in England and Wales).
